Donny Schatz wins 2004 World of Outlaws season finale at LVMS

Donny Schatz wrapped up the 2004 World of Outlaws season in Las Vegas style, winning the 30-lap feature Saturday night at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway¿s half-mile dirt oval.

Schatz started the final race of the year on the pole after winning the dash race and was an automatic qualifier into tonight¿s feature event after placing third in Friday night¿s main event.

¿We¿re awful lucky to be standing here,¿ Schatz said.  ¿It¿s the best way to end the season, with a victory. Let¿s go back home and get stuff ready and come back in 2005 and do this again.¿

Schatz lost the lead after a wreck on the second lap caused the red flag to wave and was passed by Shane Stewart on the restart. Stewart held on for five laps before being passed by both Daryn Pittman and Schatz. Schatz took the lead from Pittman on lap eight and drove to victory.

¿The other guys had softer tires I think and that showed on the start,¿ Schatz said.  ¿I¿m the kind of driver who uses the tires a little hard.  Once they got heated, I didn¿t have any doubt in my mind that we¿d get by the other drivers.¿

His victory secured his third-place finish in the championship standings, his highest finish in the Sprint Car series.

¿This team keeps digging and digging and never give up,¿ Schatz said. ¿Everybody stands behind us and gives us 110%, and you can¿t ask for anything more than that.¿

The 2004 season got off to a rocky start for Schatz, who did not earn a feature victory until Labor Day Weekend Calistoga, Calif.  That victory proved to be the turning point of his ¿04 campaign.  Schatz went on to win five more features, including tonight¿s finale.

Schatz¿s first win at LVMS came on Nov. 3, 1998.

Pittman finished in second, followed by Steve Kinser, Stewart and Craig Dollansky.

Terry McCarl was the fastest qualifier on the night with a lap of 14.470 sec.  Joey Saldana won the B-Main.

Steve Kinser celebrated the 19th series championship of his career, clinching the title after last weekend¿s race.  His son, Kraig Kinser, wrapped up the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie-of-the-Year title, despite not reaching either feature races this weekend.

The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series will return to LVMS March 10 and 11, 2005.
