32 local racers entered in NHRA ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals;

LVMS' event is second only to Indy's U.S. Nationals

Entries filed by local racers will account for 32 of the 918 received for this week's NHRA ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.  The Las Vegas event's entry list is second only to the U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park on the 2002 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series schedule.  A total of 919 entries were received, but one late scratch -- Top Fuel Dragster returnee Gordie Bonin -- dropped the grand total to 918.  In the Pro ranks, 33 Top Fuel Dragsters are entered, joined by 27 Funny Cars, 51 Pro Stocks and 34 Pro Stock Bikes.  In addition, 19 Pro Modifieds have filed entries.

Heading the list of local entries is Las Vegan George Marnell, a two-time NHRA Pro Stock national event winner.  Marnell is joined on the Pro entry list by Sean Connor, of Boulder City, and Henderson's Jay Matthews, both riding Pro Stock Bikes.

The Strip's 2002 Pro champion, John Phlegar, is entered in the Street division.  His fiancée, Becky Landram, also is entered in the Street class and both drive '72 Chevelles sponsored by Marie Callender's.

Speaking of The Strip's 2002 E.T. Bracket Racing Series champions, John Irving (Street champion) and Don Kruse (Super Quick champion) have entered the Super Comp and Stock categories, respectively.

Also of interest is Stephanie Jones-Wong, an Assistant Principal at Bonanza High School, entered in the Stock class with a '77 Plymouth Volare.  Hopefully she won't have to face husband Paul, also entered in the Stock class, in the final round.
