Kenny Bernstein is on a hot streak having won two of the last three races, and the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team is enthusiastic about an opportunity for a good showing at the third annual ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals Oct. 24-26. Bernstein, substituting for his son Brandon who was injured in a first round accident May 18 at Englishtown, N.J., has been to the final round three times in five outings at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, winning twice, the 2000 and 2001 spring events. In 2001, he and Brandon became the first father/son duo in NHRA¿s 50-year history to win at the same national event. At that time, Brandon was competing in the alcohol dragster category. Following Brandon¿s injury in May, Kenny jumped back in the cockpit in Topeka, the ninth race on the NHRA POWERade tour, and in 13 events has clawed his way up to seventh place in Top Fuel point standings. Because points stay with the driver, not the car, Kenny had to accrue points separate from Brandon. Kenny was 19th in point standings following the Topeka event. ¿As far as going to seventh place in point standings, that¿s a credit to the team,¿ said Bernstein. ¿That¿s Tim (Richards, crew chief), Kim (Richards) and the team. It¿s a team effort that gets you there. Our goal when I took over for Brandon was just to get to the top 10, and I thought if we could do that, that would be pretty cool. So it¿s neat to have fought our way up to seventh. ¿We¿re really pumped about coming to Las Vegas because that has been a good track for us. ¿At this point in the season, we¿re usually battling for a championship, so it feels a little strange to have that out of reach this year. We congratulate Larry Dixon, Dick LaHaie, Don Prudhomme and the team for a job well done. ¿Because we¿re not in the running for the championship, it¿s easy to overlook the success we¿ve had this year. When you step back and look at the overall picture for the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team, we¿ve won five events between Brandon and me, and Brandon led the point standings for one race. Five victories by one team are more than any other in the Top Fuel category other than Dixon. So we are pretty proud of our accomplishments this year, and we hope we can keep our hot streak going.¿
