Kruse sweeps 2004 Jerry¿s Nugget Championship Drag Racing Series opener at The Strip

Don Kruse of Las Vegas swept both rounds of Super Quick competition this weekend as the 2004 Jerry¿s Nugget Championship Drag Racing Series opened at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.  Kruse defeated Bob Farnum of Las Vegas on Saturday and Ken Phillips, also of Las Vegas, on Sunday.  Carl Cannavo of Las Vegas earned No. 1 Qualifier status both days.

In 1/8-mile bracket-racing competition, John Phlegar defeated wife Becky Phlegar (on Valentine¿s Day, no less) on Saturday and John Irving of Boulder City topped Dan Buchanan Jr. of Kingman, Ariz., on Sunday.

The first Midnight Mayhem of the 2004 season attracted 399 cars and 1,800 spectators on a chilly Friday night.  Midnight Mayhem is The Strip¿s safe alternative to illegal street racing.

The Strip will host two days of NHRA pro team testing on Monday and Tuesday.  Due to construction in the pit area in preparation for the upcoming NASCAR event, testing will not be open to the public.

The Strip returns to action March 19-21 for the second annual Mopars at The Strip.  For more information on the all-Chrysler event, go to
