Robert Hight launched his bid to become the first four-time Funny Car winner at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway by claiming the No. 1 qualifying position after two rounds of qualifying in the 11th annual Big O Tires NHRA Nationals.

Brandon Bernstein (Top Fuel), Jason Line (Pro Stock) and Hector Arana (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also led their categories after two rounds of qualifying.

Hight, who won at The Strip earlier this year, captured the No. 1 qualifying spot with a 4.085-second pass at 311.27 mph to open the second round of qualifying. Despite being the first car off the line, Hight’s time held up even though the track cooled as the 20 other Funny Cars made their runs. He also has win in Las Vegas in 2007 and 2009.

Bernstein’s 3.83-second pass at 321.27 mph came late in the session and knocked Bob Vandergriff off the provisional pole. Vandergriff slipped to fourth as a result of strong late runs by Spencer Massey (the No. 2 qualifier) and Steve Torrence (the third qualifier).

Line was the top qualifier in Pro Stock and is hoping his time of 6.624 will hold up Saturday and that he can pull off four similar runs on Sunday and clinch his second world championship.

Arana, who captured the provisional No. 1 qualifying spot in Pro Stock Motorcycle, is attempting to earn his third consecutive top qualifying position at the fall event in Las Vegas.

Pro qualifying will resume at The Strip on Saturday with sessions at 11 a.m. and 1:45 p.m.
