Qualifying for the NHRA Heritage Series at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway has concluded. In the Nitro Nostalgia Funny Car class, 21 entries were expected and a record 25 showed up. The class has an eight-car field and all 25 cars struggled to push their way past the cutoff point. All but one struggled, that is.

Leah “Heartbreaker” Pruett-LeDuc of Cherry Valley, Calif., posted the fastest time in the first session of qualifying and then bettered her results in the second stanza to earn No. 1 Qualifier status. LeDuc, driving Steve Plueger’s Plueger & Gyger Mach 1, hammered the field with a pass of 5.810 sec./243.85 mph to claim the top spot. Second was Steve Rajcic of La Habra Heights, Calif., driving Plueger’s L.A. Hooker Mustang.

Seventeen cars failed to qualify for the tight eight-car show, including: Steven Densham (in ninth place, driving his father’s Teacher’s Pet Camaro), Mike Savage, Claude LaVoie, Brian Thiel, Troy Green, Josh Crawford, Dwayne Patton, Craig Michael, Mike Adams (Coors Corvette), Ed Dougan (Fighting Irish), Dennis Swearingen, John Hale, Dale Van Gundy, James Day, Nathan Bugg, Michael Peasley and Jack Wright. The non-qualifiers are expected to stay over on Sunday to make exhibition passes. The first round of Nitro Nostalgia Funny Car eliminations will take place at 11:05 a.m.
