The Las Vegas chapter granted $275,000 to 67 local children's charities at the ceremony, an increase of 16 groups from 2004. Honored guests included Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman and Secretary of State Dean Heller.

The Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities held its third annual golf tournament on Monday, June 20, at the exclusive SouthShore Golf Course at Lake Las Vegas. The tournament raised $22,000 for the children of Las Vegas and southern Nevada. The Richard Petty Driving Experience foursome of Brad Mark, Jason Allen, Jim Allred and Andre Lagamarsino, defeated 24 other teams in the tournament.

The latest phase of Las Vegas Motor Speedway's expansion began in earnest Wednesday with the demolition of the upper Section 1 grandstand. Construction crews will spend the next week clearing debris from the area, diverting parts of Checkered Flag Lane and relocating palm tress in preparation for the construction of the 17,000-seat Richard Petty Terrace.

Work began earlier this month on the new Richard Petty Terrace at the 1.5-mile superspeedway at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Before construction can begin, crews must remove some existing seating and demolish old rest room and concession areas beneath the first-turn grandstands. The new grandstand will be built in time for the 2006 NASCAR Weekend. The seating capacity for the new structure likely will exceed 14,000.

Nevada's largest annual sports weekend has a new date for 2005. Las Vegas Motor Speedway's NASCAR Weekend is scheduled for March 11-13, 2005, a week later than in recent years. Again in 2005, the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 is scheduled to be the third stop on the NASCAR Nextel Cup tour. The 2005 event will mark the eighth visit of NASCAR's most elite series to Las Vegas's 1.5-mile superspeedway. The Sam¿s Town 300 NASCAR Busch Series event will precede the NASCAR Nextel Cup event on Saturday, March 12. Qualifying for both races will be held Friday, March 11.

The Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children¿s Charities will hold its second annual Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Cannery Hotel & Casino. The charity event will kick off the NHRA ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Tournament players will have the opportunity to play against NHRA drivers, including Brandon Bernstein, driver of the Budweiser King NHRA Top Fuel Dragster. Entry fee (buy-in) is $250 and players will receive $1,000 in chips. Players also will receive complimentary hors d'oeuvres and drinks throughout the evening.

Thursday Night Street Wars was a success. The first car arrived at 4:30 p.m., two and a half hours before the gates opened. By 10 p.m. 146 cars were registered and ready to race with an estimated 500 people in the stands.

NASCAR drivers Kevin Harvick, Scott Wimmer, Kyle Petty, David Green, Stacy Compton, Clint Bowyer, Jon Wood, Ashton Lewis, Jason Keller, Randy LaJoie, Shane Hmiel, Paul Menard, Reed Sorenson, Kevin Lepage, Brent Sherman, Kim Crosby, Brendan Gaughan, NFL Hall of Fame QB Jim Kelly and Mickey Jones of the Home Improvement television show participated in the fundraiser.

More than 100 drivers will attempt to qualify for this weekend¿s UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 and Sam¿s Town 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The large number of drivers will add more intensity to Friday¿s Pole Day as 49 drivers vie for the 43 spots in Sunday¿s UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 and 52 drivers will attempt to qualify for Saturday¿s Sam¿s Town 300 NASCAR Busch Series event. There are no surprises among the Nextel Cup entries. Matt Kenseth, who has won two straight at LVMS, local drivers Kurt and Kyle Busch and superstars Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. all have filed entries. Saturday¿s Sam¿s Town 300 will look a lot like Sunday¿s race. Sixteen drivers will pull double-duty by running both events. Mark Martin, Sterling Marlin, Kasey Kahne, Michael Waltrip, Joe Nemechek, Elliott Sadler, Kyle Busch, Scott Riggs and Dave Blaney all are entered in both events.

The Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children¿s Charities will hold its annual NASCAR Driver Auction at Sam¿s Town Live!, inside Sam¿s Town Hotel & Gambling Hall in Las Vegas on Thursday, March 10 at 6 p.m. Doors will open at 5 p.m. The following NASCAR drivers have agreed to participate in the auction: Scott Wimmer, Kyle Petty, David Green, Stacy Compton, Jon Wood, Ashton Lewis, Jason Keller, Randy LaJoie, Shane Hmiel, Brent Sherman, Ryan Hemphill, Kim Crosby. This list is expected to grow as the auction date draws near. Although the auction is not an autograph session, NASCAR driver and hometown hero Brendan Gaughan will sign autographs inside Sam¿s Town Live! from 5-6 p.m. to help raise funds for the children of Las Vegas.

Jeff Gordon obviously is ecstatic about claiming his third Daytona 500 title last week, but he also knows that the next few weeks will give everyone a better idea of the contenders and pretenders. ¿I am definitely excited about getting to some non-restrictor plate tracks,¿ Gordon said. ¿It¿s great to be going in with momentum from Daytona, but we have to keep it going.¿
Gordon will be looking to join Jeff Burton and Matt Kenseth as the only two-time winners at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the March 13 UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400. He also will attempt to break a stranglehold on the speedway that is held by Roush Racing. Roush drivers have claimed five wins in seven races at LVMS.

When Kyle Busch was a child, he played on a makeshift go-kart riding around the cul-de-sac outside of his home. From the outside looking in, one can wonder what penetrated his young mind while he veered his way though the asphalt road course he constructed out of soda cans. Potentially visions of competing like his favorite NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon or winning as he had seen his older brother Kurt do on the local racetracks time and time again. Fast forward the clock of time 10 years and Busch is strapping into the ride of a lifetime.

Las Vegas' NASCAR Weekend in Las Vegas is still weeks away, but it will certainly look like race weekend when the stars of the NASCAR Nextel Cup and Busch Series invade Las Vegas Motor Speedway this week for Preseason Thunder Las Vegas. A record 43 Nextel Cup teams have filed testing vouchers, including all 10 drivers in last year¿s Chase for the Cup. The Cup teams are scheduled to test on Monday, Jan. 31 and Tuesday, Feb. 1. On Wednesday and Thursday, 20 NASCAR Busch Series teams are scheduled to test including 2004 champion Martin Truex Jr. and former Champ Car star Michel Jourdain Jr.

Las Vegas native Kurt Busch ¿ NASCAR¿s 2004 Nextel Cup Series champion ¿ will sign autographs at Sam¿s Town Hotel & Gambling Hall (5111 Boulder Highway) on Monday, Jan. 31, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Busch's Roush Racing teammate, Greg Biffle, will sign autographs at the Stardust Hotel & Casino on the famous Las Vegas Strip on Monday, Jan. 31, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Both autograph sessions are open to the public and there is no admission charge.
