Twenty-year-old drag racer Scott Parks of Burlingame, Kans., is hoping that Christmas will come a little early this year at next weekend¿s Goodguys/K & N Filters 16th Nitro Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Instead of arriving in a neatly-wrapped package though, the present he wishes to receive will be in the form of a small white piece of paper -- an official time slip from LVMS. He¿s looking to become drag racing¿s first six-second Junior Fuel racer.

Doug Kalitta of Ann Arbor, Mich., ran the fastest speed in NHRA history ¿ 335.57 mph (4.483 sec.) ¿ during second-round qualifying for the fifth annual NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Amazingly, Kalitta¿s record run did not secure the No. 1 Qualifier position. Shortly after Doug¿s pass, cousin Scott Kalitta and Brandon Bernstein ran the quickest side-by-side pairing in NHRA history ¿ 4.472 sec./333.74 mph to 4.479 sec./333.66 mph ¿ to capture the first and second qualifying berths. Scott¿s pass of 4.472 sec. also set a new track record.

According to Station Casinos¿ oddsmaker Micah Roberts, defending NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Pro Stock champion Greg Anderson is the odds-on favorite -- at 7-to-5 -- to win Sunday¿s NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals Pro Stock finale. With 7-to-5 odds, anyone who bets on Anderson isn¿t going to win much money if he wins. Then again, since Anderson has won the last two NHRA Pro Stock events at The Strip ¿ and has two wins in three races this season ¿ you¿d be silly to bet against him.

Las Vegas always was a career destination for Eric Medlen, but the 30-year-old native of Oakdale, the northern California town that bills itself as "The Cowboy Capital of the World," thought that when he arrived he'd be riding one horse, not 7,000. As a high school team roping champion, Medlen's dream was to earn his way into the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo contested each December at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Pro Stock standout Jeg Coughlin, Jr. once again showed why you never count him out to be a threat on race day. The two-time NHRA Pro Stock champion posted his best finish to date by scoring a runner-up finish at the last event. Jeg moved up two spots to land in the No. 4 position in the 2004 NHRA POWERade championship standing after three events.

Ron Capps has achieved just about every major accomplishment in NHRA drag racing except finishing the season at the Auto Club Finals in Pomona, Calif. on top of the Funny Car points standings and winning an NHRA championship. Capps, a 14-time NHRA winner, has won in both the Top Fuel and Funny Car categories; only 13 drivers have accomplished that feat. He drives one of the two Skoal Racing Funny Cars for arguably the biggest name in the sport, Don Prudhomme.

In seven outings at The Strip, Yates' best showing is runner-up in April 2001. He was a semifinalist in October 2001 and April 2002. With good test results and a chassis responding to changes, Yates just might be in the running for the race win this time around. He'll roll the dice and take his chances.

In a city where people roll the dice 24 hours a day, Del Worsham might be seen as a real gambler when he makes the switch to the new Chevy Monte Carlo Funny Car body this weekend's NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals in Las Vegas. After all, Worsham is headed to The Strip fresh off back-to-back wins in Phoenix and Gainesville, and those wins were just the two latest victories in a string of 13 such triumphs he has posted since the beginning of the 2001 season. For Worsham, all of this recent success has come with the venerable Pontiac Firebird body atop his racecar, but the driver of the red Checker, Schuck's, Kragen Funny Car doesn't see the move to the Monte Carlo as a risky proposition at all.

It's early in the 2004 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series season, with 20 events to go, so Whit Bazemore is not as frustrated as a Funny Car driver might be after three outstanding qualifying efforts in three events that were followed by three early-round upsets in eliminations.

Terry Haddock is anxious to participate in this weekend's fifth annual NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Gary Scelzi returns to the NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals this weekend practically a grizzled veteran compared to where he stood at this time last year, when he began his first full season of Funny Car competition for Don Schumacher Racing. The three-time Top Fuel champion now has a complete year of Nitro Funny Car racing notched on his holster and prefers to forget his spectacular explosion here last year, which made the video highlights but helped put him on the DNQ list for the only time in all 23 events in 2003.

As he does at every stop on the circuit, Kurt Johnson enters this weekend's NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals with a list of goals that he and the ACDelco Racing team would like to accomplish. Naturally, some of these objectives are self-evident, such as winning the event or having a safe race. Others, however, have a significance that may not be readily apparent to those outside the team.

The Bernstein family has cashed in at ¿The Strip¿ at Las Vegas Motor Speedway quite frequently. Six-time NHRA champion Kenny Bernstein has won two of three outings at the SummitRacing.com Nationals, and he shared victory circle with son Brandon in 2001 when Brandon piloted an alcohol dragster to winner¿s circle the same day. The Bernstein duo became the first father and son in NHRA¿s 50-year history to win their categories at the same national event, an accomplishment Kenny counts among his top two most cherished memories.
