The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will close its 2006 drag racing season on Friday evening from 7 p.m.-Midnight with the final round of BFGoodrich Midnight Mayhem.

Two consecutive NHRA-sanctioned drag racing events at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway set records both on and off the track as NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series and Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series racing continues to grow in popularity -- and population -- in Las Vegas.

A pair of Batemans won the Top Alcohol finales at the Short Line Express Markets NHRA Pacific Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series race Sunday evening at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Citing the unprecedented success of this past weekend's NHRA ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals, Las Vegas Motor Speedway and NHRA officials have agreed to keep the event on the last weekend of October. Next year's event will be held Oct. 25-28. It had been previously announced that the event would be Oct. 18-21.

POWERade points leader Doug Kalitta is $100,000 richer after winning the 22nd annual Budweiser Shootout Saturday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Kalitta caught and passed "Hot Rod" Fuller in the last 300 feet to claim Top Fuel's biggest single-race payout with a 4.567 at 329.18 mph.

Drag racing champion John Force has seen this movie before. The difference is that this week he can write an alternative ending, a luxury he didn't enjoy during a sometimes painful first season of Driving Force, a real-life TV series in which he stars with his wife and daughters on A&E Network.

The eight-car field for the lucrative Budweiser Shootout was set on Thursday evening during a draw party at The Joint in the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. David Baca, who drives the Mach 1 dragster, was the lucky No. 8 wild card spot winner among the eight Top Fuel drivers eligible for the position.

Corey Le Clair of Pahrump, Nev., won the Super Pro finale at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Saturday on the final night of the 2006 Jerry's Nugget Championship Drag Racing Series for local bracket racers. The following drivers/riders clinched 2006 Jerry's Nugget Championship Drag Racing Series titles in their respective divisions: Chris Naffziger (Super Pro), Leo Shaver (Motorcycle), John Irving (Pro) and Dan Reaume (Sportsman). Official final point standings will be released Tuesday.

The ninth round of the 10-race 2006 Jerry's Nugget Championship Drag Racing Series now is history and wins were scored by Doug Schneider (Super Pro), Brandee Price (Pro), Paul Wong (Sportsman) and Jason Whitenack (Motorcycle). On Saturday morning, Vanessa Hodges of Las Vegas won the Thunder category final and Tristan Craig claimed the win in the Lightning class during the Meadow Gold Jr. Dragster Series Presented By Short Line Express Markets.

Former drag racer Tiffanie Hicks, 21, passed away on Friday, Sept. 15. She is the sister of Super Pro driver Greg Hicks and the daughter of retired drag racer Phil Hicks. The Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities will hold its third annual "Cards for Kids" Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at the Cannery Hotel & Casino. The charity event will kick off the NHRA ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

A two-day photography workshop by chief track photographer David Allio will be held at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Nov. 3-4. The two-day session will include a drag racing photography workshop on Friday, Nov. 3, at The Strip at LVMS (in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Series Finals) and paved short track oval racing photography on Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Bullring at LVMS (in conjunction with the annual Fall Classic Super Late Model event).

Toshiki Yoshioka of Hiroshima, Japan, won the Las Vegas D1 Drift Grand Prix finale over Fukushima, Japan's Nobushige Kumakubo at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Saturday night. NHRA Las Vegas Sport Compact Nationals winners included two local drivers: Dana Westover (Quick 16) and John Tran (BFGoodrich Street Stock), both of Las Vegas. The much-anticipated NHRA Pacific Division Open rolled into town Saturday, with over 300 drivers competing. Saturday's action was capped by a win for the local MATCO Tools-sponsored driver, Justin Lamb, in the Top Comp division. Also taking home coveted Wally trophies were Tom Albritton, Jack Beckman, Mike Blodgett, Bob DeFrancesco, Kathea Woods, Mary Baltzell, Valarie Howard and Scott Joines.

Energy drink manufacturer Red Bull will transform the pit area of The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway into a drive-in movie theater on Wednesday, June 21, during Wednesday Night Street Wars. A special screening of "The Doctor, The Tornado & The Kentucky Kid" will be shown on a 17-foot video screen behind the main grandstand and will run in conjunction with the on-track drag racing action.

Defending Super Pro champion Chris Naffziger won the 2006 NHRA King of the Track title Saturday night at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway during Night Of Destruction II Presented By Ford Country. Naffziger, driving a 1970 Nova, defeated Doug Schneider of Las Vegas for the title. Jett Dwyer of Palmdale, Calif., won the NHRA Jr. Dragster King of the Track title by defeating Amanda Philips of Cedar City, Utah. These titles were contested during The Strip's annual drag racing thrill show (featuring Monster Trucks and Jet Cars), which was followed by the Jerry's Nugget Championship Drag Racing Series for local bracket racers. Final-round victories in the Jerry's Nugget Championship Drag Racing Series were won by Ron Landram (Super Pro), Ricky Gray (Pro), Robbie Irving (Sportsman) and Rick Newport (Motorcycle).

Colt Dwyer of Palmdale, Calif., won the Jerry's Nugget Championship Drag Racing Series Super Pro finale over Jimmy Lintz of Las Vegas Saturday night at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Dwyer's 2005 Undercover dragster went 7.747 sec./174.17 mph. The race began and ended at the starting line when Lintz fouled ("red-lit"). Robin Harris of Las Vegas scored the Pro category win by defeating Boulder City's John Irving. Larry Vosburg won the Sportsman category finale over Kyle Hirschi. Rick Newport won the Motorcycle final over Dave Phillips.

Ed Thornton ran a record 6.513 sec. at 228.73 mph, but lost on a holeshot to Steve Paulauskis at 6.515 at 217.11. Paulauskis had a .020 reaction to Ed's .023. Margin of victory was .0012. FINAL-ROUND RESULTS

While most of us were working Sunday's NHRA national event, The Strip at LVMS lost one of its most dedicated employees in a car accident. There is a small article in today's newspaper, but it says nothing about how valuable he was to us, and how much we liked him.

Melanie Troxel, Cruz Pedregon and Kurt Johnson all won big during Sunday's NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals at The Strip. Dale Howard of Las Vegas fared the best of all local racers.

At the previous NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event in Houston last weekend, native Australian Dave Grubnic, driver of the pink and black StriVectin-SD Top Fuel dragster, was unexpectedly ousted in the first round of final eliminations after gaining positive momentum by winning the Top Fuel title at the event previous to Houston in Gainesville, Fla., the second win of his career.

With the continued support of Jerry's Nugget Casino, the participants in the E.T. bracket series will receive a record $10,000 per year total points fund, distributed over five classes: Super Pro, Pro, Street (Sportsman), Motorcycle and Sport Compact.

A free NHRA driver autograph session will take place near the Del Mar Lounge at the new South Coast Hotel & Casino on Friday, February 3, from 7-8 p.m. The South Coast Hotel & Casino is located on the famous Las Vegas Strip at 9777 Las Vegas Blvd. South. Minors accompanied by adults will be allowed to attend.

Justin Lamb of Henderson and Dan Reaume of Kingman, Ariz., were among the winners on Saturday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The unique non-point, 1/8-mile meet drew a number of entries - one from as far away as Nags Head, N.C.

Thirteen-time NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Funny Car champion John Force and Hillary Will established themselves as the fastest Funny Car and Top Fuel Dragster drivers, respectively, during the four-day NHRA Nitro Blast-Off at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, which concluded today. Will also posted the fastest Top Fuel Dragster time today and Robert Hight was the quickest Funny Car driver on the property under breezy conditions.

Officials from Las Vegas Motor Speedway and the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) have announced the addition of a new sportsman drag racing event to be held at The Strip at LVMS. The new event, known as the Las Vegas NHRA Sportsman Open, will be contested on Saturday, June 17.

The kickoff for the 2006 NHRA POWERade season is rapidly approaching, and in just four short weeks the finest drivers in the Pro Stock category will converge on The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the Pontiac Pro Stock Showdown on Feb. 4. The Pontiac Pro Stock Showdown at LVMS will provide teams with the opportunity for some intense, last-chance testing before they make their way west to Pomona Raceway and the official start of the 23-race campaign.
