Drag racing champion John Force has seen this movie before. The difference is that this week he can write an alternative ending, a luxury he didn't enjoy during a sometimes painful first season of Driving Force, a real-life TV series in which he stars with his wife and daughters on A&E Network.

What do a Funny Car driver and a PBR rider have in common? More than you might think. This week the NHRA POWERade Series and the Ford PBR World Finals are taking over Las Vegas, giving sports fans all they would need in the way of power and performance.

The eight-car field for the lucrative Budweiser Shootout was set on Thursday evening during a draw party at The Joint in the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. David Baca, who drives the Mach 1 dragster, was the lucky No. 8 wild card spot winner among the eight Top Fuel drivers eligible for the position.

In a city known for its high-stakes gambling, Kurt Johnson and the ACDelco Cobalt Racing team have gone from being a long-shot to a favorite. During the NHRA's first five visits to The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the second-generation racer was not much of a factor, missing one start and advancing to the second round twice.

  • 10/19/06
The NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series is a welcome assault on the senses. It's incredibly loud. Nitromethane fumes invade your nostrils and tire smoke fills the air. Wild-looking race cars scream down the quarter-mile drag strip at more than 300 mph. It's not exactly the place you'd expect to find those white-jacketed beauty consultants you see behind the cosmetics counter at your local department store. But they're coming to the NHRA ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Oct. 26-29 and you can thank NHRA Top Fuel Dragster driver David Grubnic for that.

Throughout their six-year involvement with the NHRA's fall race at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, automotive replacement parts leader ACDelco has strived to appoint a grand marshal who embodies both the spirit of the Las Vegas Strip and a real car guy's passion for anything automotive. It can be argued that for the 2006 edition, they may have found the one person who best fits this description -- legendary ZZ Top singer/guitarist Billy F. Gibbons, the grand marshal of the sixth annual ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals, which will be held on Oct. 26-29.
