Jimmy Spencer¿s first trip to Las Vegas with his new team was a productive one. Stacy Compton served notice that he will be a top contender when the NASCAR Busch Series visits Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the Sam¿s Town 300 on March 1.

Spencer was the fastest of the five NASCAR Winston Cup teams testing at the 1.5-mile superspeedway on Thursday. Spencer toured the tri-oval in 32.61 seconds (165.593 mph). It was his first time out at LVMS with his new Ultra Motorsports team.

¿We learned a lot,¿ Spencer said. ¿We¿re all just getting to know each other and it was a good two days.¿

Rookie contender Tony Raines was second on the speed chart Thursday with a lap at 33 seconds (163.636 mph). Raines was followed by Ted Musgrave (33.08, 163.241), Kenny Wallace (33.10, 163.142) and rookie Brandon Ash (33.80, 159.763).

Compton, in his second year with ST Motorsports, waited until the end of his two-day test to turn his fast time. Compton¿s lap late in the day of 32.80 seconds (164.634 mph) was the fastest of all Busch cars on Thursday and was second only to Kevin Harvick¿s 32.75-second lap on Wednesday. All times were taken on cars set up for race conditions and not qualifying conditions.

¿We were just about ready to slit out wrists,¿ Compton said. ¿We picked up two seconds in two days. In race terms, that¿s almost unheard of. We battled tires most of the time, but I think we found something.¿

Thursday completed the four-day LVMS test. In all, 27 NASCAR Winston Cup cars and 18 NASCAR Busch Series cars participated in the test in preparation for the March 2 UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 NASCAR Winston Cup race and the March 1 Sam¿s Town 300 NASCAR Busch Series race.
