All motorcyclists throughout the Las Vegas Valley are invited to participate in the March of Dimes RIDE for Babies to raise a goal of $100,000 for efforts in preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.

The party will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The ride, starting and ending at the speedway, will be a poker run format. Breakfast will be at a McDonald's and lunch will be provided by the Harley Davidson Café.

There will be raffle prizes, including a Kawasaki 250 as the grand prize provided by RideNow Powersports. Riders who raise more than $1,000 will earn the right to take a lap at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Live music will be provided by West Coast Blues Conspiracy, Rick Smith and the Black Jack Blues, and John Earl and the Boogie Man Band.

Six hundred forty babies are born during an average week in Nevada. Ninety-four are born too soon. Fifty-four are born with low birth weight and have to fight for their lives. Four babies lose that fight before their first birthday.

"Our research means hope for babies born prematurely; some so small they fit into the palm of your hand," said Dale Andreason, state director of March of Dimes Nevada Chapter. "We fight for health care so children can see a doctor when they need to get their shots. Our educational programs tell women what they can do to help their babies be born healthy and reduce the risk of preterm labor."

Farmers Insurance is the primary sponsor of the event.

"This is the first year Farmers has sponsored a motorcycle ride for babies," said Jim Westerman, senior vice president of sales for Farmers Insurance Group. "We've been in partnership with March of Dimes for more than 20 years, and thought we would ‘rev' our fundraising engine this year."

"One in eight babies is born prematurely and the dollars raised by this ride goes to help those babies get a healthier start," Westerman said.

"This ride will allow us to reach an all new group of people to help us in our fight to end prematurity, "said Paul N. Hopkins, chief executive office of Farmers Group Inc. "We're proud to join the March of Dimes in its mission, while having some fun at the same time."

The Harley Davidson Café on Las Vegas Blvd. will be hosting a pre-registration from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5. Registration also can be completed at or by calling 702.732.9255 Ext. 224.
