When it comes to major motorsports events, January is one of the calendar's quietest months. But race cars will roar loud and often during a busy January at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
NASCAR and NHRA testing, a very popular annual charity event and many other activities will have the speedway at full speed as the new year begins.

"We like to say that we have racing every weekend, but January will be more like racing every day," said LVMS general manager Chris Powell. "It's a great reflection on our facility that both NASCAR and NHRA teams choose to test here. And the various driving schools and track rentals will keep the speedway very busy as we lead up to the NASCAR Weekend Feb. 29-March 2."

The highlight of the month will be NASCAR Preseason Thunder Las Vegas. All of the teams in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series are expected at the 1.5-mile, high-banked superspeedway on Jan. 28-29 to prepare for the March 2 UAW-Dodge 400. On Jan. 30-31, the NASCAR Nationwide (formerly Busch) Series teams will test in preparation for the March 1 Sam's Town 300.

The Strip at LVMS will host its annual Nitro Blast-off Jan. 18-20. Many of the top drivers in the NHRA's Top Fuel Dragster, Funny Car, Pro Stock, Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car and Sportsman categories will use the three-day test session to prepare for the upcoming POWERade Drag Racing Series schedule. The Strip also will host its first Midnight Mayhem of 2008 on Friday, Jan. 25.

And the busy January also goes off the track as well. Speedway Children's Charities will host the annual Mel Larson Night of Champions on Monday, Jan. 28 at Bally's. Long-time LVMS medical director Dr. Dale Carrison will be the honoree and NASCAR veteran driver Kyle Petty will be the featured speaker. ESPN reporter Jamie Little will serve as mistress of ceremonies for the event, which also will honor 2008 champions from the Bullring and Strip.

All of this action will be part of the buildup for NASCAR Weekend. Tickets for all three days of racing as well as passes for the Neon Garage, Lucky 7 preferred parking and driver introductions are available. Call 1-800-644-4444 or visit www.lvms.com for tickets and passes.
