Defending Top Fuel champion Tony Schumacher, reigning Funny Car World Champion Matt Hagan and Pro Stock season points leader Jason Line opened as the betting favorites for the 16th annual NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Wednesday.

Schumacher, who won in Las Vegas last spring, is a 7/2 favorite in the Top Fuel class, with Spencer Massey coming in at 9/2, according to the Golden Nugget's odds makers. Shawn Langdon is third at 5/1, Antron Brown was listed at 6/1 odds and Doug Kalitta and J.R. Todd came in at 7/1.

"You can't make any money that way," Schumacher, who has a record eight NHRA Top Fuel world championships, joked about being the favorite. "It's quite possibly the most difficult thing to bet on ever, because there are so many cars and so many things that go right and wrong. I would bet on the longshot, because the longshot car has a chance of winning out there anyway."

Hagan, a two-time world champion, is a 4/1 favorite in the Funny Car division and is followed by defending NHRA Nationals champion Alexis DeJoria at 9/2. The Golden Nugget has Jack Beckman listed at 5/1, with Ron Capps next at 6/1 and Robert Hight listed at 7/1.

"It's a pretty cool deal, and we don't want to let anybody down and want to win it for ourselves," said Hagan, a 16-time NHRA winner. "You just never know (what will happen) when you pour nitro in the tank, and you just have to go out there and do the best you can. I've won from the 14th (qualifying) spot and from the first spot, so you've just got to be in it to win it."

Line, who advanced to the Pro Stock finals last Spring, is a 4/1 favorite in his division, followed by defending champion Erica Enders-Stevens and Greg Anderson at 5/1. Rodger Brogdon and Allen Johnson are next at 7/1.

"It sounds good, and you've just got to make it happen," Line, who has been racing since 1989, said of being the odds-on favorite in his class. "This race is an important race for us to win. I've got probably the best car I've had in years now, so I feel pretty good about it."

This weekend's three-day event is fifth of 24 stops in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, and drivers in the top three classes will be battling for crucial series points as they chase world championships.

Tickets are available online at, or by calling 1-800-644-4444. Children 12 and under who are accompanied by a ticketed adult will receive a free general admission ticket during the three-day event at The Strip.
