6:30 p.m. -- Pros position themselves for Saturday -- Pro qualifying took action into dinner time at The Strip, with Jason Line of Mooresville, N.C., finishing atop the Pro Stock class qualifying list with a 6.606-second run. Defending champion Erica Enders-Stevens of New Orleans was second at 6.617.
Line was happy with the first day of qualifying and said he believes the car can continue to get faster in Saturday's qualifying rounds.
"I'm very excited about tomorrow," Line said. "We've got a great race car, and it's going to get better. We still need to make some adjustments, but the good news is (the car) responded and it's definitely going to go faster.
"I'm tired of watching everybody else win the K&N Horsepower Challenge, and I want to make it my turn tomorrow. That's the plan, and we've got a good hot rod to do it with."
The Funny Car division was next, and Matt Hagan of Christiansburg, Va., was the top qualifier with a time of 4.007 seconds. Jack Beckman of Norco, Calif., was next at 4.014.
"(Crew chief) Dickie (Venables) is making the right calls on the race track, and the car is just really strong," Hagan said. "Tomorrow, we're going to run behind the dragsters, so things will change up, and we just need to work hard and make sure we're No. 1 at the end of the day tomorrow."
In Top Fuel, Indianapolis' J.R. Todd had the quickest qualifying time at 3.758 seconds, with defending champion Tony Schumacher of Lakeway, Texas, second at 3.779.
"Key one is the track is one of the hotter tracks we've seen all year with the sun on it," Todd said. "We knew that, later in the day, the conditions would be good for us to throw up a big number like we did. Our run was pretty slow early on compared to some of the better runs we've had in the past, but it was charging from the half-track on. That’s what it takes to put up those numbers.
"It’ll be interesting come race day."
The pro classes will have two more rounds of qualifying on Saturday, and the Pro Stock class will also have the K&N Pro Stock Horsepower Challenge as part of the day's lineup as well.
That's a wrap from The Strip for Friday, and we'll be back at it on Saturday for more nitro action.
4:45 p.m. -- Januik solid on first day of qualifying -- The afternoon has been just as hectic as the morning, with dozens of cars making runs and spraying rubber at The Strip.
