Las Vegas Motor Speedway's Outside Road Course will be buzzing this weekend as it plays host to the Optima Ultimate Street Car Challenge on Saturday and Sunday.

Approximately 75 highly modified street-legal cars are expected to compete in the two-day event, which is part of a national series of competitions that includes stops at Texas Motor Speedway, Wisconsin's Road America, Pikes Peak International Raceway and the National Corvette Museum Motorsports Park in Bowling Green, Ky. Drivers will square off in five elements - speed-stop, autocross, road course, design and engineering and a road rally through downtown Las Vegas - in timed competitions rather than head-to-head matchups.

"It's like Trans-Am racing used to be," said Cam Douglass, director of marketing for Optima Batteries. "It's a case where people buy factory-made cars off the lot and put performance parts on them to get them to racecar speeds. The reason we started this was to make that connection between people and the cars they actually see out on the road."

This marks the second consecutive year the event has come to LVMS' Outside Road Course, and the competition is being filmed for MAVTV Network's "Search for the Ultimate Street Car" series. The 10-event Optima Ultimate Street Car Challenge series will culminate in Las Vegas with its championship finale Nov. 6-8.

The asphalt course features 12 turns and six possible configurations that range from 7/10 to 2.4 miles. Two configurations may run simultaneously at the course, which is equipped with an electronic time and scoring loop, concrete curbing and ample runoff space.

"The track facility itself is one of the nicest ones we have all year," said Jimi Day, executive director and co-founder of the Ultimate Street Car Association. "It's just a great place to have an event, especially this early in the year. Las Vegas is a hotbed for the road racing community, and everyone loves the outside road course."

Fans can buy pit passes for $20, and all children 13 and under get in free. In addition, active military personnel with valid IDs will be granted free admission to the event. Click HERE for more information on the event, and this link provides additional details about the Outside Road Course.
