Reigning Pro Stock World Champion Erica Enders and Funny Car driver Tommy Johnson Jr. were among the drivers who set track records at The Strip at LVMS on the first day of qualifying for the NHRA Toyota Nationals on Friday.

Enders, who could clinch her second consecutive world championship on Sunday in Las Vegas, set track records for elapsed time (6.559 seconds) and miles per hour (201.28) in the second qualifying session of the day and heads into Saturday's qualifying rounds atop the leaderboard. Enders has won 18 consecutive knockout races at The Strip at LVMS and is looking to keep the streak going this weekend.

"I have the most incredible team in the world, and I couldn't possibly love them any more," Enders said. "They give me such a constantly fast and bad hot rod, and I'm pretty excited about that. We still have a job to do, and that's to win races."

Drew Skillman was second in Pro Stock qualifying at 6.594 seconds, with Greg Anderson (6.596) in third.

Johnson Jr., a 12-time NHRA winner, set the Funny Car track record with an ET of 3.931 seconds, which was a career high. He was happy to put everything together in the second qualifying session of the day.

"Our back's against the wall, and it's quite a few points to gain in the final two races," said Johnson Jr., who is third in Funny Car points. "We have a team that's capable of getting those points, and we came in here with a team that has a carefree attitude. Everybody's like, 'Let's have some fun, go and try to get two trophies and see what happens.'"

Courtney Force was second with a 3.933-second ET, but her top speed of 325.77 miles per hour set a record for the track as well. The top seven qualifying times from Friday all eclipsed Matt Hagan's previous track record of 4.006 seconds from a year ago.

Antron Brown, who also can clinch his second career world title this weekend, was the Top Fuel qualifier, and his 3.722 ET was a track record. Larry Dixon and Billy Torrence were second-fastest at 3.733.

Shawn Langdon had the fifth-fastest ET of the day for the division, but his top speed of 332.67 mph also set a track record at the Las Vegas facility.

Brown hit 326.95 mph and feels focused on the task at hand in the coming days.

"We know what's on the line," Brown said. "We're not coming in here like we have a big points lead, we're coming here like it's the first race of the Countdown. We're attacking it with everything we have, and we're just going to let the chips fall where they fall."

Track temperatures fluctuated throughout the day, going as high as 98 degrees and falling into the low 70s after the sun went down.

"This track is just incredible," Brown said. "The track temp is literally 15 degrees cooler than what it's supposed to be because the wind's blowing and there's no humidity. The track is good enough to run hard in sunlight, and after the sun went down, the track cooled down so fast that you had to bring your A game.

"You have to bring the kitchen sink, and we had to put everything we had into it to make it go."

Alligator farmer Jerry Savoie of Cut Off, La., was the top Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifier with an ET of 6.876 seconds, and his top speed of 194.21 mph. Eddie Krawiec was second at 6.929, while L.E. Tonglet was third with an ET of 6.930 seconds.

"The mindset was just to come out here and take it round by round," said Savoie, who was the quickest in both qualifying sessions. "We've got a handle on this thing, and I'm trying to come out here and do the same thing every time."

The top 12 qualifiers in each class, based on times from either Friday or Saturday, after tomorrow's sessions will move on to Sunday's knockout bracket.
