The Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities hosted its annual Grant Distribution and Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony on Dec. 7 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
The chapter granted $255,000 to 44 local children’s charities at the festive ceremony. Among the recipients were: The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Nevada, Shade Tree, Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation, Boys and Girls Club of Las Vegas and Candlelighters for Childhood Cancer.
Children from each organization were invited to attend the event, which included a child-friendly holiday buffet, music by DJ Mathias, Christmas carols by vocalist Malia Civetz and gifts from Santa Claus, who arrived via Richard Petty Driving Experience race car. Each group also was treated to a complimentary drive through the Gift of Lights, which is located this year at LVMS.
Fundraising events for the 2010 season included the Mel Larson Night of Champions Presented By Autotrader.com (which honored former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion and Las Vegan Kurt Busch), the chapter’s eighth annual golf tournament, the seventh annual Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament at the Cannery Hotel & Casino, the Chasers for Charity Fanfest and the second annual WNFR Celebrity Bowling Tournament.
Making a difference in a child’s life is the focus of Speedway Children’s Charities. SCC strives to do this in collaboration with the non-profit organizations it supports nationwide. Individually, SCC’s local chapters identify the needs of children in their communities and award grants to organizations that address them.
