NASCAR¿S new qualifying procedure will not apply to LVMS in 2005

Las Vegas Motor Speedway¿s traditional NASCAR Weekend schedule will be unchanged in 2005. Speedway officials said LVMS will not be among the venues that will be moving NASCAR Nextel Cup qualifying to Saturday.

In an announcement made Monday, NASCAR cited that a majority of the speedways hosting Nextel Cup events would hold qualifying for their Nextel Cup races on Saturday mornings instead of the traditional Friday afternoons. However, qualifying for the March 13, 2005 UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 at LVMS will be held on Friday, March 11.

"The Las Vegas NASCAR Weekend is unique in comparison to many of the other NASCAR Nextel Cup events," said Chris Powell, LVMS general manager. "Roughly 70 percent of our race fans come from out of state, and they come from all over the world to enjoy three days of motorsports and three days of what Las Vegas has to offer.

"To cut a day of racing out of the schedule would be unpopular to people who have traveled great distances to get here. We applaud NASCAR¿s efforts to cut costs for the race teams, but we do not believe this would be good for our fans or our community."

Qualifying for the Sam¿s Town 300 NASCAR Busch Series event also will be held on Friday, March 11. The Sam¿s Town 300 is scheduled for Saturday, March 12.
