Woody Austin will spend all weekend driving golf balls, but on Tuesday morning Austin was more concerned with driving race cars. Austin, who will compete this weekend in the Frys.com Open, took some laps around Las Vegas Motor Speedway in a Richard Petty Driving Experience stock car. "I'm a huge NASCAR fan," said Austin after turning laps around the superspeedway in excess of 140 miles per hour. "This will sound strange, but I've never been to an actual race. When they are working, so are we." But Austin will buckle into a race car at every opportunity. He has driven a race car at Texas, Homestead-Miami, Lowe's Motor Speedway at Charlotte, Walt Disney World and Michigan. "I really don't have a lot of hobbies," said Austin, who is a fan of Jeff Gordon. "But anytime I'm in area with a race track and I can get in one of these cars, I take advantage of it. It really helps me get my mind off the golf tournament for a little while." Once Austin completed his eight laps at LVMS, he wanted more laps. "The new pavement and the new banking are great," Austin said. "I wanted to go faster. I wanted to run over the instructor. This is so much fun though. I just have such respect for what the NASCAR drivers do week in and week out. The race in such close quarters, and even if they don't all like each other, they have no choice but to trust each other. It's a lot different from what (golfers) do." Austin is a two-time winner on the PGA Tour and stands 74th on the current Tour money list.
