Mike Cofer hopes to make it two consecutive wins to begin the 2004 season when the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series comes to the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday. The former NFL place-kicker is the current points leader in the Super Late Model division after winning the Southern Nevada Dodge Dealers Showdown last month, and hopes to maintain that position throughout the season. ¿Our goals really haven¿t changed much since last year,¿ Cofer said. ¿We want to run in as many races as possible, and hopefully we¿ll be successful.¿ Cofer and his Quality Motorsports team finished third in the Dodge Weekly Series final points standings in 2003 behind Chuck Trickle and Scott Gafforini. Cofer began racing following a six-year career in the NFL as a place-kicker for the San Francisco 49ers. His football career was quite successful in that he was able to set a number of NFL and 49ers place-kicking records along with winning two Super Bowl Championships. ¿Basically, I just wanted to try something new,¿ Cofer said. ¿It had been something I¿d wanted to get into for a long time, and I got the chance, so I took it.¿ Cofer began his racing career running short-track races in California for the first few seasons. 1994 was the break-out year for Cofer as he was able to capture Rookie of the Year and Most Popular Driver honors on the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Tour. That same year, Cofer finished fifth in the final points standings after one win, three top-fives and nine top-tens. In addition to the Super Late Models: Late Models, Chargers, Legends Cars, Thunder Roadsters, Bandolero Cars and Bullring Bombers are on the racing card.
