Las Vegas Motor Speedway's ninth annual Duel in the Desert - the biggest dirt-racing event held in the western U.S. - will grow again this year as the show expands to a three-day format for IMCA Modifieds and a two-day show for Super Dirt Late Models. The show will be held at LVMS' half-mile dirt oval Nov. 16-18 event will pay $5,000 to the winners of Saturday's A-Features. "The popularity of the event has succeeded our expectations and has continued to grow at a tremendous rate," explained Chris Blair, LVMS' senior director of drag strip and dirt track operations. "The 2005 Duel in the Desert attracted 170 IMCA Modifieds and 62 Super Dirt Late Models in one of the most exciting events ever held at the dirt track. The 2006 event is expected to attract even more participants in both classes. In order to provide participants and fans with a more enjoyable racing experience, we're expanding the racing program to offer more opportunities for drivers to qualify for the A-Feature in both classes." Officials from IMCA and the Western Dirt Late Model Tour have been contracted to join LVMS' officials in the production of the event. "The Duel in the Dessert was the largest IMCA-sanctioned event in the Western Region last season and second largest IMCA sanctioned event in the United States in 2005," said Brett Root, IMCA Vice President.
