NHRA Funny Car veteran Del Worsham on dual mission in Las Vegas:

Defend points lead, educate students on illegal street racing alternatives

Veteran NHRA Funny Car driver Del Worsham will be a busy man when his plane touches down in Las Vegas next week.  Worsham will attempt to earn his third victory of the 2004 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Funny Car season, defend his points lead and educate local students on the danger of illegal street racing.

Worsham defeated 12-time NHRA Funny Car champion John Force in the final round at Gainesville, Fla., on March 21 and leads the point standings coming into Las Vegas for the April 1-4 NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

On Thursday, April 1, Worsham, Chris Blair, LVMS¿ senior director of drag racing operations, and Angie Wolff of the Nevada Highway Patrol will participate in an assembly at Shadow Ridge High School in Las Vegas to get illegal street racers off public roads and onto drag strips.

Checker Schuck¿s Kragen Auto Parts, (CSK Auto, Inc.), and the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) have joined forces to educate the youth of America on the dangers of street racing and the benefits of racing at licensed race tracks under controlled conditions.  Blair will invite the 1,500 students to Midnight Mayhem, The Strip¿s safe alternative to illegal street racing.  Wolff spearheads NHP¿s HEAT program, which will field a car at selected Midnight Mayhem events during the 2004 season.

¿Too many people don¿t understand the power of an automobile,¿ said Worsham.  ¿But if something breaks, or something goes wrong, the last place you want to be is on the street.  The NHRA has programs at tracks all over America.  They check out your car, show you how to race, and give you a time slip so you can see how your car¿s running.  You won¿t have to worry about hurting yourself or some innocent bystander, and you won¿t have to worry about getting arrested.¿

Worsham and teammate Phil Burkart, along with eight other drivers, will participate in a free NHRA autograph session at the ESPN Zone at the New York New York Hotel & Casino on Thursday, April 1 from 7-8 p.m.
