Second annual NHRA Desert Sport Compact Nationals at The Strip July 16-17;

Defending Pro FWD champion Hoyos sets new national record en route to Las Vegas

The NHRA Summit Sport Compact Series will return to The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the second annual NHRA Desert Sport Compact Nationals July 16-17.  The premier drag-racing series for sport compact cars is accompanied at each meet by the SONY Stylefest lifestyle event, which includes a car show, stereo competition, bikini contest, hip-hop DJs and rappers and midway attractions.  This year¿s Las Vegas event also will include the fourth round of the Hankook Tires Drifting Series at The Strip¿s Drift Arena and a special compact cars-only Midnight Mayhem.  Midnight Mayhem is The Strip¿s safe alternative to illegal street racing.

Defending Pro FWD (front wheel drive) champion Nelson Hoyos is on a mission to repeat his 2003 Las Vegas feat.  Hoyos, a native of Havana, Cuba, who now resides in Hollywood, Fla., dominated the Pro FWD division at last year¿s event, winning the Pro FWD finale and claiming Low E.T. and Top Speed of the meet.  On June 12, Hoyos¿ Ecotec-powered Chevrolet set a new NHRA national record during qualifying with a pass of   7.786 sec. (188.60 mph) at Bandimere Speedway near Denver.  The ink barely was dry on Hoyos¿ speed record when he went out the very next day (during the final round of eliminations) and eclipsed his own mark with an event-winning pass of 7.778 sec.  Defending series champion Hoyos currently is second to Lisa Kubo in the Pro FWD point standings.

Local racer Dana Westover of Las Vegas dominated the Sport RWD (rear wheel drive) category by earning No. 1 Qualifier status, setting Low E.T. and Top Speed of the meet and winning the final round.  Westover, whose 1993 Toyota regularly exceeds 130 mph on each pass, is a popular attraction at The Strip¿s Midnight Mayhem series.
