Larry Morgan of Newark, Ohio, drove his zMAX Dodge around a star-studded 16-car NHRA Pro Stock field to win Saturday's Pontiac Pro Stock Showdown at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. To claim his $5,000 winner-take-all prize, Morgan had to defeat Erica Enders in the first round of eliminations. Enders posted an amazing .001 reaction time off the starting line but shut the car off soon after taking the green light. Morgan defeated Mark Pawuk in the second round, then enjoyed watching the red light blaze on opponent Richie Stevens' side of the Christmas tree. Morgan met NHRA veteran Warren Johnson in the final round. Johnson, who had to defeat Allen Johnson and David Connolly to meet Morgan in the final, left early and lit the red light. Morgan coasted to victory at 131 mph./7.74 sec. "This is phenomenal, I couldn't be happier," said Morgan. "This is a perfect way to start the season and head into Pomona. I got lucky in the final round because there was water on the starting line. I had to shut off or else I would have crossed the centerline. Thankfully, I saw Warren's red light." NHRA testing will continue at The Strip at LVMS on Sunday, Feb. 5, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
