(June 21) -- Two-time NHRA Top Fuel Dragster champion Scott Kalitta died today as the result of injuries suffered in a Funny Car qualifying accident at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J., during the running of the Lucas Oil NHRA SuperNationals. Scott, 46, was the son of legendary Top Fuel and Funny Car racer Connie Kalitta.

"We are saddened by the loss of Scott Kalitta and express our condolences to his family and the entire Kalitta Motorsports organization," said Chris Powell, president and general manager of Las Vegas Motor Speedway.  "Connie Kalitta's teams - Scott, Doug Kalitta, David Grubnic and Hillary Will - have been regular fixtures at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway's NHRA national events and test sessions.  Their operation was considered a home team due to their sponsorship by Las Vegas-based Technicoat and Las Vegas businessman Ken Black.

"Scott was a great champion, a hero to thousands of fans and a good friend to The Strip at LVMS and everyone in the sport of drag racing."

A public memorial service to celebrate the life of Scott Kalitta will be held Thursday, June 26, at 7 p.m. at the Ernsthausen Performing Arts Center, 350 Shady Lane Drive, Norwalk, Ohio.
