Antron Brown is the defending Top Fuel Dragster champion of the NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Although he’d welcome a repeat performance this weekend, the N.J. native is realistic about his chances. Brown spoke of the strength of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series’ Top Fuel Dragster class during a press conference in Las Vegas.

“We’re looking at the whole class of Top Fuel right now. When we (started) this year we saw a lot of different changes. Prior to the start of the season, I did an interview. He (interviewer) said, ‘Well, Larry Dixon’s not racing and Del Worsham retired, so your class is gonna be a pushover this year..’ I said, ‘Obviously, you don’t watch our sport. Our class right now – I think this is going to be the toughest field in history for Top Fuel.’

“Morgan (Lucas) and his team made the right strides and they came out swingin’. We looked at the Al Anabi team where Shawn Langdon came over – Alan Johnson got a hired gun. Shawn is definitely one of the top-tier drivers in Top Fuel in my opinion. Then you look at Kalitta Racing and (David) Grubnic came out and Doug (Kalitta) did too at Pomona and they were in the top half of the field, throwin’ down. Steve Torrence is doing well. I can honestly say we have 14 cars – 14 teams – that I see in our sport that can win a race. I never could say that before in Top Fuel. Our class has definitely grown by leaps and bounds. It’s definitely the class to watch this year.”

The NHRA Weekend kicks off this evening with a free driver autograph session from 6-7:30 p.m. at the New York New York Hotel & Casino. More than 25 drivers are expected to participate (including Brown and his Don Schumacher Racing teammates) and the first 200 fans in line will receive a free Summit racing hat.
