Jay Payne of Claremont, Calif. and Joey Severance of Woodburn, Ore. scored big wins in the Top Alcohol categories at this weekend’s NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The Top Alcohol Funny Car final was a clash of the titans, featuring Payne vs. John Lombard Jr. Although Lombardo had a slightly better reaction time (.089 to Payne’s .111) Payne crossed the finish line first at 5.614 sec./258.02 mph.

Severance faced Chris Demke of Sunland, Calif. in the final round of Top Alcohol Dragster competition. Severance’s dragster ran 5.409 sec./263 mph to Demke’s 5.407 sec./265.85 mph.

Curt Stewart of Lake Havasu City, Ariz. defeated Dick Vander Meer for Super Comp honors.

The Super Gas finale was won by Long Beach’s Travis Balough over Lance Trujillo.

Super Street honors went to Ryan Herem of Quartz Hill, Calif. for topping Virgil Dalluge.

Competition Eliminator was won by Brandon Huhtala (Puyallup, Wash.) over Justin Lamb of Henderson.

Dave Bridgewater of Devore, Calif. won the Super Stock class, defeating Jimmy DeFrank of Chatsworth, Calif. in the final.

Jody Lang (Puyallup, Wash.) took Stock honors, defeating Doug Gibson.

Shane Thompson of Las Vegas was the weekend’s only local winner. Shane won Top Sportsman over Chip Rumis of Ramona, Calif.

Chip Rumis of Ramona, Calif. won Top Dragster over David Morgan of Concord, Calif.

Tom Medlin of La Mirada, Calif. won Sportsman Motorcycle by defeating Dave Phillips of Las Vegas in the final.
