Las Vegas' Brendan Gaughan was the fastest driver during a two-hour practice session for the NASCAR Winston West Series at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The teams' practice session was extended from one to two hours in preparation for tomorrow's Orleans 150. The fact that Gaughan's practice speeds (33.158 sec./162.857 mph) were quickest was no surprise: His NAPA Auto Parts/Orleans Hotel & Casino Dodge was head and shoulders above the rest of the Winston West group who tested here earlier this month. What did surprise everyone were Gaughan's comments after the session ended at 6 p.m. PDT. "We're not running right yet," admitted Gaughan, who ran only four practice laps. "We had some pretty big problems out there. We're just going to put it in race trim tomorrow and see if we can't make it run really good, really long. "It wasn't even close to what we wanted to be. It bottomed out real hard going into Turn 1. It did what it did and we're happy with it. It put us on top of the board, but it wasn't a very good lap. "Las Vegas Motor Speedway is always a great track. It never really changes much -- that's what's really nice about this track. It not like places like Charlotte where weather and temperature make such a big difference. Here it always stays pretty consistent. Gaughan last year's NASCAR Winston West Series season finale at LVMS. This year, he is leading the Raybestos Rookie of the Year points chase in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and has two wins -- both at Texas Motor Speedway -- to his credit. NASCAR Winston West Series points leader Eric Norris, of Dana Point, Calif., was second fastest with a lap of 33.545 sec./160.978 mph. Championship contender Austin Cameron was eighth, at 33.979 sec./158.922 mph. The Orleans 150 at LVMS is the series' season finale and will decide the 2002 championship. The practice session was interrupted only once, when Carl Harr of Edmonton, Alberta, hit the wall. He was not injured. All but two of the Orleans 150's 28 entrants practiced today. The NASCAR Winston West Series drivers will practice again on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. PDT before qualifying at 1:15 p.m. First NASCAR Winston West Series practice -- Top 5: 1.
