Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities' inaugural golf tournament raised $13,500 for children of southern Nevada


The Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities' inaugural charity golf tournament, held Monday, March 31, at the Revere Golf Club at Sun City Anthem, raised $13,500 for the children of southern Nevada.  Twenty foursomes participated in the event.

            "In January, we set a goal of $10,000 for this first golf tournament," said SCC Las Vegas Chapter chairman Keith DeRiso.  "We are extremely pleased to have exceeded that goal.  Many board members and volunteers put in a lot of hours to make this a success, and our corporate sponsors helped put us over the top.  We already are planning to make next year's tournament bigger and better."

This new event followed the recent NASCAR Driver Auction, which raised $145,720 for the children of Las Vegas and southern Nevada on Feb. 28, during Las Vegas Motor Speedway's UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400/Sam's Town 300 NASCAR Weekend.  In one month, the Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities has raised $159,220 for local causes which impact the lives of children in the Las Vegas area.

The Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities held its annual Grant Distribution and Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Dec. 3, 2002.  The Las Vegas chapter presented checks in the total sum of $228,000 to 31 local children's charities at the ceremony.

Speedway Children's Charities ( is a non-profit foundation based in Charlotte, N.C., that distributes funds to charities and foundations providing medical, emotional and social services to children in need.  Founded in 1984 by O. Bruton Smith, chief executive officer of Speedway Motorsports, Inc., Speedway Children's Charities has grown into a national foundation with chapters located at each of the six Speedway Motorsports Inc., facilities, including Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N.C., Texas Motor Speedway in Dallas-Ft. Worth and Atlanta Motor Speedway. Each chapter's objective is to assist as many children as possible.  Last year, Speedway Children's Charities provided more than 190,000 children with much-needed funding through 228 non-profit children's organizations.
