Second annual Speedway Children's Charities golf tournament raises $28,581 for the children of southern Nevada

 

The Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities¿ second annual golf tournament, held April 19 on the Red Rock Country Club¿s Arroyo course, raised $28,581 for the children of southern Nevada.  Last year¿s event, held at the Revere Golf Club at Sun City Anthem, raised $13,500.

¿Needless to say, we are proud of our group,¿ said SCC Las Vegas Board Chairman Keith Deriso.  ¿The tournament went extremely well, everyone enjoyed it and we were able to double what we raised last year for the children of southern Nevada.  Our hats are off to everyone involved and we sincerely thank our participants, sponsors and volunteers.  Next will be even bigger and better.¿

Television and motion picture actor Mickey Jones (¿Home Improvement,¿ ¿Tin Cup,¿ ¿The Fighting Temptations¿) participated in the tournament.

Rick Anderson, Jim Villella, Chris Solari and Matt Daugherty comprised the winning foursome with a score of 56 for the shotgun-start scramble.  Finishing second (after a tiebreaker) were Clark Gear, Zach LaVato, Robert Gartz, Gordon Estes.  The foursome of Ken Cox, Ken Cox Jr., Randall Cox and Steve Wright finished third with a score of 57.

Last December, The Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children¿s Charities distributed a total of $250,000 to 41 local children¿s causes at its annual grant distribution and Christmas tree lighting ceremony.

Speedway Children's Charities (www.speedwaycharities.org) is a non-profit foundation based in Charlotte, N.C., that distributes funds to charities and foundations providing medical, emotional and social services to children in need.  Founded in 1984 by O. Bruton Smith, chief executive officer of Speedway Motorsports, Inc., Speedway Children's Charities has grown into a national foundation with chapters located at each of the six Speedway Motorsports Inc., facilities, including Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N.C., Texas Motor Speedway in Dallas-Ft. Worth and Atlanta Motor Speedway. Each chapter's objective is to assist as many children as possible.  Last year, Speedway Children's Charities provided more than 190,000 children with much-needed funding through 228 non-profit children's organizations.
