Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities grants

record $275,000 to 51 local children's causes at LVMS


The Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities held its annual Grant Distribution and Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Tuesday, Nov. 30.  Honored guests included Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman and North Las Vegas Mayor Michael Montandan.

The Las Vegas chapter granted $275,000 to 51 local children's charities at the ceremony. Both amounts once again are records for the Las Vegas chapter. This year¿s total surpasses 2003 by $25,000 and 10 more local children¿s causes received grant checks.

The evening's festivities included performances by the Culture Shock Las Vegas inner city dance troupe and the Greater Las Vegas After School All Stars, as well as a visit from Santa Claus.

The list of 51 grant recipients included: Amerindian, Inc., Arthritis Foundation, Camp Ronald McDonald For Good Times, Candlelighters For Childhood Cancer, Greater Las Vegas After-School All Stars, Nellis Air Force Base Youth Program, Opportunity Village, Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Nevada, YMCA of Southern Nevada and St. Jude¿s Ranch for Children.

Fundraising events for the 2004 season included the annual NASCAR Driver Auction at Sam¿s Town Live!, the chapter¿s second annual golf tournament, the inaugural Texas Hold ¿em Poker Tournament at The Cannery Hotel & Casino, the Birthday Bash car show and local racing events at the Bullring and The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Speedway Children¿s Charities ( is a non-profit foundation based in Charlotte, N.C. that distributes funds to charities and foundations providing medical, emotional; and social services to children in need. Founded in 1984 by O. Bruton Smith, chief executive officer of Speedway Motorsports, Inc., Speedway Children¿s Charities has grown into a national foundation with chapters located at each of the six Speedway Motorsports Inc., facilities, including Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, Lowe¿s Motor Speedway near Charlotte, N.C., Texas Motor Speedway in Dallas-Ft. Worth and Atlanta Motor Speedway. Each chapter¿s objective is to assist as many children as possible.
