Chris Powell has been promoted to president and general manager of Las Vegas Motor Speedway, it was announced Thursday by Speedway Motorsports. Powell has been executive vice president and general manager of the facility since December, 1998.

"Chris and the LVMS staff have done an excellent job in making Las Vegas Motor Speedway one of the top motorsports facilities in the country," said Bruton Smith, chairman and chief executive officer of Speedway Motorsports. "We are appreciative of the efforts of Chris and his entire staff, and we look forward to even bigger and better things in the future."

Powell, a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, came to LVMS after serving as the manager of media relations for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company's involvement in the NASCAR Winston (now Sprint) Cup Series.

"I appreciate the confidence that Bruton Smith and Speedway Motorsports have shown in me over the past nine and a half years. This promotion is a reflection of a dedicated and hard-working staff of employees who have helped make this speedway a model for others."
