A new racing season produces great anticipation for the competitors and last Saturday night was no different with the 2024 Star Nursery Series opener at the fast 3.8-mile paved oval known as the Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s “Bullring.” And the night’s action saw some regulars and new faces in victory lane when the evening concluded.

It was a family affair for the Jacks brothers, Kyle and Sam, as the Las Vegas duo captured two main events with their Battleborn Racing machines in the 602 Modifieds and the NASCAR Super Stocks. Kyle ran wire-to-wire to hold off Bullring legend Doug Hamm in the 30-lap Modified main event in his potent No. 41 machine, while Sam was victorious in the No. 4 Battleborn stock car in the 20-lap Super Stock finale.

Kyle Jacks came back from a devastating crash in the final race in 2022 and continued his ways from the 2023 season as he jumped to strong advantage at the drop of the green flag over Sam Jacks, Brian Williams and Hamm. Kyle continued his margin over Sam and Hamm at the halfway point as the second and third place runners put on a wild battle. Hamm then slid by Sam Jacks on lap 19 and attempted to hunt down Kyle in the lead. The “Houndog’s” chase just came up short at the checkered flag. It was K. Jacks, Hamm, S. Jacks, Brian Williams, Brian Reed, Scott Ozborne and Ben Williams at the finish.

For Sam Jacks in the NASCAR Super Stocks feature, the local racer jumped to the lead at the start from his outside starting position and never really looked back. Even Don Geary’s great restart for the lead on lap nine didn’t faze Sam as he bolted back in the lead and took the checkered flag. The veteran Geary, sporting an impressive new paint scheme on his No. 45 mount, placed second followed by Colton Ray and Mike McKearn.

“I knew Doug would be coming on hard and I could see him in my mirror,” said Kyle Jacks after his Modified win. “We have worked hard in the off-season to improve this machine and it has been a family affair with our dad, my brother and others helping. Of course, we have a lot of local support which we could race without them like Battleborn Racing. It’s always fun to be back in victory lane.”

For Sam Jacks, it was his brother who assisted in preparing his Super Stock for the season opener.

“I have to thank Kyle for working on this car and getting ready for tonight,” said Sam Jacks. “He then said he wanted me to drive it tonight, and this car was hooked up. It’s fun to drive a car so strong.”

Joining the Jacks brothers in the Bullring winner’s circle Saturday night were racers very familiar with placing their cars in victory lane as Cody Brown, Jaron Giannini and Ben Williams plus main event newcomers Amilleo Thomson, Nick Nuccitelli, Ashton Leonard and Wyatt Layne.

For Brown, the former national semi-pro USLCI Legend Car champion, it took a sensational late race inside move to slide by race leader Tyler Reif for the 20-lap USLCI M&H Building Specialists/JBM Underground feature win in his No. 88 machine. Brown has been a multi-race winner at the Bullring in the past two years, but Saturday’s night drive might have been his most impressive.

Starting sixth after setting the fastest qualifying time, Brown had to fight his way through some very tough competition before moving into second place on lap 15. As he fought off challengers Stephen Brucker, Ashton Williams, Branden Giannini and Keller Meechudhone, he set sail on challenging Reif, who is always a top contender at the Bullring. With the white flag coming out, Brown made the inside move in turn three and held off Reif to the checkered flag.

“My car was really good tonight after setting fast time,” said Brown. “I knew the first three rows were inverted, so I would have to fight my way to the front. Tyler is always fast here, and I was able to get up to him and make the move in turn three. The Legend cars are so competitive here at the Bullring that you can’t make a mistake or any type of slip up. It’s a great way to open the 2024 season.”

Like Brown, Jaron Giannini was quick time in his division, Pro Late Models, Saturday night in the fast No. 25 stock car. Giannini also came from sixth starting spot to grab the lead from young Amilleo Thomson in a spirited scrap through the first of two 40-lappers for the Pro Late Models.

Taking the lead on lap nine after a restart, Giannini battled nose-to-tail with Thomson through the next 21 laps when Thomson made an inside move for the lead. Contact occurred then with the two leaders before Jaron was able to grab the lead back and race to the checkered flag.  Second went to young Gavin Ray followed by T.J. Roberts, John Holtger and Johnny Spilotro.

“We had fast car for qualifying and we needed to come from sixth,” said Giannini. “There was some pretty tight racing there and I had to make some hard moves to get the lead. The car got beat up a bit in that one, but we’ll fix it and be ready for the second 40 laps.”

For Thomson, he came back from the strong run in the opener to start on the pole in race two Saturday night, and his No. 14 Star Nursery mount was on rails with an impressive wire-to-wire win. It was Amileo’s first Pro Late Model feature win after big success in the Bandoleros and Legend cars.

Giannini came from eighth to second in the second Pro Late Model feature followed by Ray, former Bullring champion Scott Gafforini, Spilotro and young Leonard with a strong run.

“I’m so excited to win this main event tonight with the Star Nursery car,” said Thomson. “We came back from the first race mishap and started from the pole. And the car was very fast again like in race one. We have a great group of people who helped on this race car, and I can’t thank them enough. I’m just so pumped up to win this main event.”

Leonard, the multi-time USLCI M&H Building Specialists/JBM Underground Bandoleros champion at the Bullring, has moved into the Junior Late Model division and scored his first 2024 Bullring win with a green flag to checkered flag win over Colton Ray and Brody Manning.

Another newcomer to victory lane in 2024 was Utah’s Nick Nuccitelli in his new No. 6 “Thunderino” was a sensational 6-second win in the 20-lap NASCAR Nostalgia Street Rods Outlaw Factory Stock final. Nuccitelli, the fast qualifier, started on the pole position and never looked back to a strong win over Jacob Quartaro, Micheal Miller, Justin Cicchini and Nuccitelli’s son, Tuscan.

Another new visitor to the Bullring Victory Lane was 14-year-old Wyatt Layne who drove his No. 21 car to a dominating win in the USLCI M&H Building Specialists/JBM Underground Bandoleros 12-lap main event. The eighth-grade student defeated Mason Colato, Peyton Harbison, James Trimmer, Leia Trimmer, Dylan Layne and Jeff Conners.

In Friday evening’s preliminary action, Colato took the eight-lap Bandoleros feature with Ashton Williams winning the 20-lap Young Lions Legend cars main and Tyler Reif scoring the 20-lap Pro Legend cars finale.

NEXT RACE: With the 2024 Star Nursery Series at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway leading into the new campaign, the next event will take place on Saturday, March 9, with the “Going Green Night” featuring double Outlaw Stock and Super Stock main events as well as a 50-lap Pro Late Model feature, Modifieds, Legend cars, Bandoleros and the popular Skid Plate cars. Adult general admission is $8.00 with children 12 & under free. For more information, please contact the LVMS ticket office at 800-644-4444 or online at LVMS.com.
