The most popular event of the 2025 Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s Bullring season, the annual “Night of Fire,” proved to have fireworks on the track as well as in the air at the fast 3/8-mile paved oval Thursday (July 3) night.

With a full house in the grandstands and a packed “Stockyards” section in turns three and four, the fans were excited to see some hot action on the track, and they were not disappointed from the start including many T-shirts being shot into the stands from the “Gun Gals,” Kathy and Anna. With a great salute for Independence Day in the opening ceremonies, the 40-lap NASCAR Pro Late Model main event provided a wild kickoff to the action.

With local star R.J. Smotherman leading the two traveling racers – Kyle Keller and Jeffrey Peterson – for the first 27 laps, the first of two Pro Late Models feature looked to open with a big upset. But Smotherman’s No. 24 stock car slowed down the front straight with a rearend issue in the race car, and Keller and Peterson began a fierce battle for the lead. With the two former Bullring regulars swapping the lead, Peterson held the advantage when Keller attempted to slide inside in turn three and made contact.

The result was both drivers sent to the rear of the field as they caused the yellow flag. The misfortune for Peterson and Keller was good fortune for local star and Bullring points leader Cody Brown. Brown, driving the No. 88x Paul Johnson Drywall/Sherwin Williams machine, went on to score his fifth feature win of the year over Gavin Ray, Mark Allison, Spencer Gallagher, T.J. Roberts, Houston Simonette, Keller and Peterson.

“I didn’t really have the car this race and we’ll have to figure out a few things for race two,” said Brown, the former Semi-Pro Legend Cars national champion. “My spotter said I was in a good spot and keep being consistent. Luckily, those guys in front were battling hard and they messed up. I have been wanting to win the Fourth of July race, especially in Pro Late Model car. It’s great with these beautiful fans here.”

In the second 40-lap Pro Late Model main, it was a straight up battle with Peterson and Keller starting one-two at the green flag. And they fought it out to the finish with Keller, the ARCA Menards West regular, returning to his home track for the first time in many months, taking the lead on lap 13 and fighting off Peterson’s challenge to the checkered flag. Smotherman returned to action to round out the podium (top three) followed by Brown, Gallagher, G. Ray, Roberts, Allison, Kevin Terrell and Johnny Spilotro.

“It’s great to come back to my home track, the Bullring,” said Keller, who was the fastest qualifier in his No. 12 Keller Motorsports car. “And Jeffrey and I have had some great battles in the past, just like tonight. Thanks to all of the fans here tonight for the annual ‘Night of Fire.’ It’s always exciting to compete on this night.”

Like the wild action in the Pro Late Models, the always competitive USLCI Legend Cars give the crowd a wild event in the 25-lap feature and Thursday’s race was no exception. Some five to six racers were wheel-to-wheel battling for the top spot throughout the contest, and the finish saw two drivers land in the winner’s circle.

Former U.S. National Champion Branden Giannini fought his way to the lead on lap 21 with a strong restart and saw the likes of Sean Salazar, Colton Ray, Gallagher and Brody Whitbeck all in nose-to-tail, bumping action. Two and three wide in the last five laps, Giannini swapped the lead with Salazar and Ray entering the final lap. With Giannini in the inside of turn three and Salazar inside, both made contact and Giannini spun in turn four.

At the checkered flag, it was Salazar followed by Ray, Gallagher, Whitbeck, Alex Roe, Andrew Chapman, Eric Johnson Jr., Ryan Ford, Michael Vanderlip, Kris Johnson, Zeke Anderson, Randy Nelson, Michael Glazier and Giannini. As Salazar pulled into the winner’s circle, Giannini was there waiting for him and displayed his displeasure with the final maneuver. The two were separated and Giannini did a smoking burnout with his race car as he returned to the pits.

“I hate to get into someone like that on the last lap, but he was squeezing me to the inside,” said Salazar after things calmed down in the victory lane. “Once you hook tires in these cars, it’s tough. It was nothing intentional. I like the guy, but something tells me we’ll have a fun conversation back in the pits. Right now, I’m leading the Bullring points and I’m in the battle for the national championship too. So, it will be fight in each race now.”

It was a big night for local racer Kyle Jacks with double main event victories in the NASCAR 602 Modifieds as well as Super Stocks Thursday night.

On the 40-lap Modified race, K. Jacks had to battle his way through a tough lineup and made a nice inside move on his brother, Sam, on lap 11 to claim the second position as the field followed Brian Williams in his fast No. 6 machine for the first 15 circuits. Jacks closed on Williams and dove inside in turn three on lap 16 for the lead. With three Modified wins already this year, Kyle wasn’t about to lose that top spot as the laps counted down to the checkered flag.

But Jaron Giannini had another idea as he made the charge to Jack’s No. 41 Battleborn Racing car, and the Henderson, NV, driver came within a car length on lap 33. In two more laps, Giannini was on Jacks’ cars rear bumper and looking for move to the lead. But Kyle’s Bullring experience kept him on the low line and Jaron wasn’t able to take advantage, settling for second at the finish. Third went to last month’s Modified main winner, Kayli Peterson, followed by Sam Jacks, multi-time Bullring champion Doug Hamm, Williams, David Boardman, Robby Clutts, Ben Williams and Billy Mitchell.

“It is always exciting to race at the Bullring on the ‘Night of Fire,’ said K. Jacks, who extended his Modified points lead with the victory. “We have been working on this car all year, but we were down on horsepower late in the race. I knew Jaron was there at the end, and I just wanted to hold him off. Thanks to the great fans tonight and I hope to plan to come to more Bullring events. The racing is great here.”

Jacks came back later in the night to drive the No. 4 stock car to another win in the NASCAR Super Stock division, as the Las Vegas racer defeated Don Geary to the finish followed by Jason Kiser, Bill Paddack Jr., Jacob Quartaro, Kyle Turner and Kirk Hance in the 20-lap race.

Former Bullring track champion Michael Miller dominated the 20-lap Outlaw Factory Stocks feature with his strong No. 21 machine, leading wire to wire. Miller was followed by Pete Meyer and Vinny Raucci Jr., to make it a clean sweep on the podium for Pete Meyer’s team. Fourth went to Anthony Mann with fifth to Rob Pfaffly.

California’s Braxton Garcia used traffic to his advantage in the 12-lap USLCI INEX Bandoleros main event, as the 11-year-old trailed Bullring point leader Caitlyn Ford for the first nine laps. But Garcia, now entering the fifth grade, made the inside pass on lap ten and held off the female racer at the finish. Ford was seeking her fourth Bandoleros feature win of the season, but she had to settle for the runner-up slot this time. Third went to Brooke Ford followed by 2024 Bullring track champion James Trimmer, 2025 Bullring race winner Wyatt Layne, Malcolm Mancias, Jeff Connors, Dylan Layne, Mariyah Solomon, Leila Trimmer, Evan Johnson, Austin French, Maison Albright, Auroara Pfaffaly, Teagan Albright, Dylan Mancini, Beau Paddack, Tucker Webster, Madalinn White, Casey Piplic and Hayden Piplic.

The always popular Skid Plate finale was as wild as ever with 15 entries headed into turn one from the standing start. And, unfortunately, many were not facing the proper direction by the time they hit turn two in the 14-lap event. Former Bullring race winner Dylan Hummel had the spectators on his side early with his great “Lightning McQueen” car livery, and the Las Vegas didn’t disappoint them.

Hummel grabbed the lead on the second lap and pulled away for a big margin for most of the race, as cars were spinning in all parts of the 3/8-mile oval. In fact, Dylan had a frantic moment on the back straight on lap nine when a lapped car spun and hit Hummel’s machine. Dylan was able to collect his car in a spin and drove to the checkered flag. Second in the whacky event went to Rich McMahon with third to former track champion Ben Williams followed by Chance Bourke, Christina Harper, Connor Hart, Austin Tognotti, Dylin Smotherman, Ken Coombs, Shawn Bourke, Faythlynn O'Neill, points leader Greg Lee, Brandon Norris and Luis Rivera.

Travis Boyle was in the winner’s circle again Thursday night with his potent No. 51 Honda Civic in the 20-lap Mini Stock main event. Boyle dodged his way through traffic to take the win over Ben Williams, Cecilia Williams, AJ Hintsala, Melissa Lurkins, Austin Tognotti, Rich McMahon, Luis Rivera, Ashton Leonard, Stephen Irvine, Ken Coombs, Ryan Piplic and Kaycee Frost.

In Wednesday night action, Caitlyn Ford took the INEX Bandoleros 12-lap victory over Jeff Connors, Brooke Ford, Mancias and Leila Trimmer with Colton Ray winning the 20-lap USLCI Legend Cars Young Lions feature over Salazar, Whitbeck, G. Ray and Connor Podloski. In the USLCI Legend Cars Master class, it was Peyton Saxton scoring the 20-lapper over Eric Johnson Jr., Ryan Ford, Gallagher and Michael Vanderlip.

NEXT RACE: It will be “PIT BOSS NIGHT,” saluting our famed Las Vegas Motor Speedway mascot, with the racing action set for Saturday, Sept. 6, including the Pro Late Models, 602 Modifieds, USLCI Legend Cars, Super Stock, Factory Outlaws, Skid Plates, Mini Stocks and Bandoleros.
