This weekend’s Dodge SRT NHRA Nationals Presented by Pennzoil will mark the 1,000th event in the history of the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series. The sport has come a long way since that inaugural event in 1955 in Great Bend, Kansas, but the racing is still as furious and competitive as ever.

Championship battles in all four professional categories, Halloween fun for kids and jet cars and a cacklefest are all part of the weekend festivities at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

On the track, the tightest battle is in Funny Car where Ron Capps hold a one-point lead over Don Schumacher Racing teammate Matt Hagan with J.R. Todd 81 point behind. Steve Torrence has a 73-point lead over Brittany Force in Top Fuel, but a good day by Force and an off-day by Torrence could shrink the gap quickly. Veteran racer Greg Anderson leads Erica Enders by 81 points in Pro Stock while Matt Smith has a 25-point lead on Angelle Sampey and 56 points on Steve Johnson in Pro Stock Motorcycle.

Off the track, Saturday will be a big day for kids with trick-or-treating in the pits, Halloween costume contests and much more as LVMS celebrates one of the kids’ favorite holidays.

Friday’s professional qualifying session start at 3 p.m., Saturday qualifying rounds are at noon and 3:30 p.m. and final eliminations begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Tickets for all three days are available at LVMS.com.
