In the annual “Military & Veteran Appreciation Night” for the local attendees, it was fitting that the local racers were the stars of a wild Saturday night of action on the 3/8-mile paved oval at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The salute to the “Service” community was the theme from the spectators and racers throughout the evening as each winner in victory lane thanked the military and veterans in attendance.

The special feature of the night was the 75-lap “Silver & Gold Series” Modified competitors with the bigger engines in the fast machines and added purse money by Hoosier, Speedwagon and RPM Consultants brought out a strong field of drivers going after the $2000 first place fund.

Sam Jacks, the Las Vegas veteran driver, has been on a hot streak in recent Modified events at the Bullring with his potent No. 29 Battleborn Racing mount and he came out strong again on Saturday with the fastest practice laps and quickest qualifying lap for the pole position in the main event. Sam was the only driver to break the 15-second barrier in time trials over his brother Kyle, Aaron McMorran, Jeff Longman, Jimmy Petrie and Zach Webster.

Unfortunately, one of the top contenders, 10-time Bullring champion Doug Hamm, was forced to sit out the feature due to a blown engine earlier in the day in his famed No. 4X car at the Bullring.

At the drop of the green flag in the 75-lap “Silver & Gold Series” final, S. Jacks vaulted to the advantage immediately over his brother Kyle with McMorran and did look back until the first yellow flag period on lap 25 due to a stopped car on the back straightaway. And Sam was ready to go for the restart, jumping to a big lead again.

However, McMorran, the November Modified winner at the Open Wheel Showdown, took advantage of a slow start for K. Jacks and moved to second and prepared to mount charge towards the leader. Both S. Jacks and McMorran threaded their way through traffic as they came closer to the finish. And traffic helped McMorran get close at the checkered flag.

But S. Jacks was the “man” of the night with a clean sweep of the “Silver & Gold Series” Modified evening over McMorran, K. Jacks, Eric Rhead, Longman, Petrie, Brian Reed, Chris Cook, Kayli Peterson and David Boardman.

“I could see Aaron creeping up on me late in the race, especially in traffic,” said S. Jacks, who also won at the Bullring two weeks ago. “I might have drove the tires off a little early in the race with that fast pace. To be honest, we are used to racing shorter mains here and I was driving that pace from the start. But we got to the checkered with a great night. I wanted to thank the Battleborn Racing team as well as my dad and brother for their help on the car. I also want to thank our military and veterans for coming out tonight on a night to salute them for their service.”

McMorran thought he might had a chance for the pass late in the race, but he admitted Sam’s machine was tough to catch on Saturday night.

“The late traffic actually helped me close in on Sam,” McMorran said in the winner’s circle. “I have to look back in November when Sam was closing in on me in the Open Wheel Showdown and he could have turned me late in the race. But he gave me a lot of respect and I felt the same mutual respect tonight. Sam and his car were on another level.”

Joining S. Jacks in the Bullring winner’s circle Saturday was former U.S. Nationals winner Branden Giannini of Henderson, Nev., in the always competitive 25-lap USLCI Legends Car finale but the highlights were extremely different.

In one of the wildest Legends Car races seen at the Bullring in many years, Giannini seemed out of a chance for victory as late as four laps remaining as early leaders Brody Whitbeck and Brenden Ruzbarsky fought for the top spot.

From the green flag, Whitbeck and Ruzbarsky swapped the lead and ran nose-to-tail and side-by-side in spectacular fashion, as Giannini, who started sixth, played a waiting game and saved his tires for a last gasp effort after lap 20.

On lap 20, Ruzbarsky dove to the inside on the back straight to grab the margin over former Bullring winner Whitbeck. But it was side by side for the next two laps before Giannini got in the mix with two laps remaining. With the white flag flying, Giannini ducked to the inside, looking for move past Whitbeck and Ruzbarsky. On the back straight, Giannini moved inside of Brody as the two entered turn three.

In turn four, Whitbeck tried to make a move to the inside and touch cars with Giannini, causing Brody’s machine to spin. Giannini got sideways but saved his car for a run to the finish line. It was a drag race to the checkered flag as three cars were wide at the finish with Giannini edging out Ruzbarsky and Keaton Harbison.

Rounding out the top ten in the spectacular event were Sean Salazar, Brendan Tracy, Daniel O'Donnell, Danny Arnold, Connor Podloski, Samantha Schwarz and Ryder Juarez.

“It was a great race, and I saw the two leaders battling it out,” said Giannini. “So, I waited to see how things would go before making a move towards the front. But my car was consistent and good throughout the race. And the car was hooked up at the end, so I was able to make the inside move on the final lap. I’m sorry that Brody and I touched, but he did squeeze me in turn four. I want to thank my sponsors, VerseTile & Stone, 3rd Generation Racing and Peyton Saxton, for their help with the car.”

Another former National Legends Car champion, Cody Brown of Las Vegas, has shown more potential now in the Pro Late Model division with his fast No. 88X stock car as the young racer scored two 30-lap feature wins Saturday night. In the first event, Brown had to follow Pahrump’s R.J. Smotherman for 26 laps before he moved to the inside on the front straight to take the lead and on to the win.

Finishing in the top ten in first 30-lapper were Brown, T.J. Roberts, Smotherman, Johnny Spilotro, Mark Allison, Keller Meechudhone, Ashton Leonard, David Anderson, Gavin Ray and Parker Heffel.

In the second finale, Brown was able to come from seventh to first in just ten laps and never looked back for his third Bullring victory of the year. Second went Smotherman followed by Ray, Spilotro, Allison, Roberts, Leonard, Meechudhone, Anderson and Heffel.

“I learned a lot when driving the Legends car and I’m learning each race in the Pro Late Models,” said Brown. “We had to work hard to get by R.J. in the first race tonight. We made some adjustments for the second one and the car felt better. Coming from the back of the field, I was able to get through the field and the car was really good. It feels great to win two main events in one night. Especially on Military and Veterans Night. I wanted to thank everyone for their service and the fans for their support. Can’t wait for the next race in two weeks.”

Another double winner Saturday night was young Wyatt Layne of Las Vegas, who held off any challengers in both 12-lap races to continue his winning streak in the USLCI Bandoleros division.

Layne battled Caitlyn Ford and James Trimmer early in the first main before Wyatt was able to pull away.

Behind Layne and Ford was Mariyah Solomon, Dylan Mancini, Malcolm Mancias, Jeff Connors, Casey Piplic, Madison Stanley, J. Trimmer, Beau Paddack, Austin French, Tucker Webster, Isaiah Johnson, Brooke Ford, Dylan Layne, Evan Johnson, Leila Trimmer and Maison Albright.

In the second Bandoleros race, Layne had plenty of pressure throughout the 12 laps with Ford and Trimmer right in position for the lead. But Wyatt was able to hold his advantage to the checkered flag despite wheel-to-wheel competition. Rounding out the top five in race two were Mancini and Mancias.

In the Bandoleros Beginning main events, Hayden Piplic and Karson Orth took the two ten-lap features.

The best winning celebration Saturday night had to go to Dylan Hummel in the No. 95 Lightning McQueen machine following his win in the wild 12-lap Skid Plate final with an amazing number of “donuts” in the infield. Even Hummel admitted in the winner’s circle that he was getting dizzy with the spins.

Hummel has been on a roll lately and Saturday’s performance was a strong one after a battle with Christina Harper that resulted in both cars spinning in turn three. Dylan was able to correct his No. 95 car and use the high line of the track and dodge a number of mishaps around the 3.8-mile oval.

At the finish, Hummel won his second Skid Plate feature of the 2025 Bullring series over Austin Tognotti, Ken Coombs, Rich McMahon, Chance Bourke, Harper, Keith Johnson, Luis Rivera, Sean Salazar and Greg Lee.

In the 20-lap Factory Outlaws Stock finale, Bullring veteran Pete Meyer showed again that his No. 96 stock car was the superior machine in a very competitive race. Meyer took the lead on lap six and slowly pulled away to the checkered flag. Taking second was Rob Pfaffly followed by Vinny Raucci Jr., Michael Miller, Nick Lautenbach, Dallas Simonette and Anthony Mann.

Travis Boyle recorded his second straight Mini Stock main event Saturday with his potent No. 51 Honda Civic as he jumped to the lead at the start and was never headed. Driving a car that was a “daily driver” in Pahrump a month ago, Boyle has been the class of the field thus far at the Bullring. Finishing in the top five behind Boyle were Ben Williams, Melissa Lurkins, AJ Hintsala and Stephen Irvine.

Kyle Jacks returned to the victory lane in the 20-lap Super Stock feature with his fast No. 4 race car over veteran Don Geary, Mike McKearn, Bill Paddack Jr. and Kyle Turner.

NEXT RACE: The annual “Mothers Day Appreciation Night” is next event at the Bullring and is set for Saturday, May 3, with the Pro Late Models, 602 Modifieds, USLCI Legend Cars, Super Stock, Factory Outlaws, Skid Plates, Mini Stocks and Bandoleros.
