Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s favorite mascot, “Pit Boss,” enjoyed a great birthday party Saturday night at the “Bullring” as Round 8 in the 10-race short track season saw plenty of exciting, wheel-to-wheel action at the fast 3/8-mile paved oval.

After a two-month layoff from the Bullring competition, the racers were anxious to hit the racing surface on both Friday and Saturday nights with season points battles really heating up with three events remaining in the 2025 campaign.

Emotions were high for numerous drivers including local stock car star Kyle Keller, who recently lost his racing mentor Steve Bohanon. Keller saluted Bohanon in opening ceremonies with two slow laps with his potent No. 12 KKR Pro Late Model stock car.

Meanwhile, there were cupcakes for the racing fans to honor the track’s “Pit Boss” birthday as the pace car drivers, Anna and Kathy, helped by passing out the delights prior to the event’s action. “Pit Boss” also received a special “Appreciated Award” for his contribution to all of the LVMS racing circuits over the years.

On the track, Keller was able to dedicate his career to the Bohanon family with two impressive 30-lap NASCAR Pro Late Model main event victories Saturday in his quick machine. Keller, coming off the big ARCA West victory last month in Washington over Greg Biffle, had a strong challenger in race one with pole winner Gavin Ray holding down the lead for the 12 laps.

Ray wasn’t about to let Keller run away with several attempts to regain the lead before Kyle was able to open up a gap and take the checkered flag. An emotional Keller thanked Bohanon, the Bohanon family, his sponsors and the fans after his first win of the night.

“I dedicate this win to Steve and his family,” said Keller, the Las Vegas resident. “He did so much for me from my racing start at age eight and through the years. Recently I’ve been a little emotional with Steve’s passing. But we will continue his legacy with our team. I’m sure he is looking down on the Bullring tonight and smiling.”

With Keller and Ray fighting for the lead, Bullring point leader Cody Brown looked to extend his point margin with a third-place finish followed by Spencer Gallagher, R.J. Smotherman, T.J. Roberts, Ashton Leonard, Johnny Spilotro, Mark Allison and Derik Burns.

In the second 30-lapper, Keller came from his eighth starting spot and grabbed the lead on lap four after a caution restart. He held off Smotherman early before pulling for dominant win. Brown slid underneath the Pahrump racer for second on the last lap. Fourth went to Roberts followed by Gallagher, Allison, Spilotro, Leonard and McKenna Haase.

Keller enjoyed a special moment at the end of the night in victory lane with his family, the Bohanon family and his pit crew. He’ll return to the Bullring on Friday, Oct. 10, for the big ARCA Menards Series West event, part of the South Point 400 NASCAR weekend.

Another local racer enjoyed an emotional moment on Saturday when Brian Williams of Las Vegas drove his No. 6 Modified to victory lane in the 40-lap NASCAR 602 Modified feature. It was Williams’ first Modified main win in the class after watching his dad, Donnie, be very successful at the Bullring in the Modified division for many years.

Starting from the pole, Williams quickly proved his machine could set the pace with a strong margin in the first ten laps as the rest of the field fought side-by-side. On lap 13, the red flag appeared when Dave Boardman and Billy Mitchell got together. Both drivers were okay, but the field was bunched up again for the green flag.

But on the restart, Williams pulled way with Kayli Peterson, Sam Jacks, Doug Hamm and Kyle Jacks battling for the next positions. The yellow flag flew on lap 27 after K. Jacks had attempted to close on Williams for ten laps. But again, the Modified field had nothing for Williams on this night as he pulled out the advantage to the checkered flag. Peterson came back on the last lap for the runner-up slot followed by pint leader K. Jacks, S. Jacks, Ben Williams, Aaron Coonfield and Jimmy Petrie.

“I really don’t know what to say,” Williams admitted in the winner’s circle. “I have been coming to the Bullring to see my dad race for many years, and he won a lot. So, this first Modified win is so special. We have been close several times, but this car was on rails today. It’s a thrill to win here with my family, friends and the fans. It’s very emotional.”

While it was an emotional night for several local racers, some visiting racers were impressive with their race cars including North Carolina’s Ben Morabito, who captured four USLCI Legend Cars main events on Friday and Saturday with his lightning-quick No. 17 mount. In the first 20-lap finale, Morabito jumped to the lead immediately and didn’t look back as he defeated his brother, Nick, Daniel O’Donnell, Ashton Williams, Brody Glaze, Zeke Hanger and Matteo Papis, son of former IndyCar Series star MLax Papis.

Morabito’s run to the front in race two was a little more difficult, as the New York native started eighth and fought his way to the lead by lap nine. Ben slowly opened his gap over the field as the battle for a podium finish (top three) went to four-wide action on several occurrences. But it was Morabito, who won two features on Friday night, at the checkered flag followed by Williams, N. Morabito, Papis, Keaton Harbison, Glaze, Hanger, Cash Lecroy, Trent Dillard and Eric Johnson.

“I have driven all around the country and the Bullring is one of the toughest I have race,” said Morabito. “This is my 40th main win of the year and I want to be peaking for the Legends Nationals in a few weeks. I think the Bullring competition really helps prepare me for the next few weeks. The competition is very good here and I want to run more events at this track.”

Another Las Vegas visitor reaching the winner’s circle Saturday was Braxton Garcia of Lodi, Calif., as the 11-year-old racer was coming off his INEX Bandoleros main win at the “Night of Fire” on July 3. Garcia battled with Wyatt Layne, Malcolm Mancias, Brooke Ford and current point leader Caitlyn Ford as he took the lead on lap eight and held off his challengers.

“I wanted to win this one after taking the win at the ‘Night of Fire,’” said Garcia, who just entered the sixth grade. “I got close to Caitlyn in the first race, and this race had some good racing. I really enjoy coming to the Bullring to race against this strong field. And it’s special to win here.”

When Garcia wasn’t winning in the Bandoleros, it was the rookie female racer, Caitlyn Ford, who leads the Bullring standings by over 40 points. Ford, entered the weekend with three feature wins, and the Las Vegas teenager added to that win number with two victories on Friday and another on Saturday night in her fast No. 54 machine.

In the opening Bandoleros finale Saturday, Ford took advantage of an early Garcia spin and held off Braxton for the 12-lap win. Taking third was Tucker Webster with Layne and Jeff Conners rounding out the top five.

“Our car has been fast all year and this weekend showed it again,” said Ford. “It’s my rookie season in the Bandoleros and getting to the winner’s circle has been fantastic. I would definitely like to win the Bullring championship this year, and we just need to keep running up front. It’s been a great season.”

The Williams family had another win on Saturday with Brian’s brother, Ben, driving to the 12-lap Mini Stock final, as the former Skid Plate champion jumped to the lead on lap one and another looked back. Ben’s new Honda car has been quick since it was introduced at mid-season and point leader Travis Boyle tried to chase Williams down but had to settle for second place. Third went to Cecilia Williams followed by Melissa Lurkins, A.J. Hintsala, Rich McMahon, Austin Tognotti, Luis Rivera and Ryan Piplic.

The biggest upset of the night came in the NASCAR Super Stocks as Kyle Jacks entered the evening with seven consecutive wins in seven races. Jacks had to start sixth in the 20-lapper and fought his way to second by lap three. But it was veteran Don Geary who grabbed the lead at the green flag and kept his foot flat in the No. 45 stock car.

Geary had Jacks on his rear bumper for the last 15 laps, but Don stayed in the low line and held off Kyle for the win. Jacks made a couple of inside moves and they touched a few times, but Geary was solid and pulled off the upset. Third went to Bill Paddack followed by Adam Simon, Kirk Hance and Mike McKearn.

In the NASCAR Outlaw Factory Stocks, Michael Miller came from behind to pass Vinny Raucci Jr. in the last few laps to capture his fourth main event in 2025. Miller is looking to close in on another Bullring title with three races remaining. Third on Saturday was Dallas Simonette followed by Rob Pfaffly, Nick Lautenbach, Josh Quartaro and Pete Meyer.

The popular Skid Plate class was another wild and crazy race with the field running the 12-lap event in the opposite direction than normal on the 3/8-mile oval. Early leaders Chance Bourke and Austin Tognotti held the advantage for the first six laps, but Tognotti spun in turn two with a backmarker. That gave the advantage to Dylan Hummel in the fast “Lightning McQueen” No. 95 car. Hummel has won race utilizing the high line near the crash wall, and Dylan continued that trend again.

Hummel was able to open his margin and took the easy win over Tognotti, Bullring point leader Greg Lee, Luis Rivera, Bourke, Christina Harper and Rich McMahon.

NEXT RACE: “Throwback Night” is next on the Bullring schedule, the Round 9 of the 10-race season, with the racing action set for Saturday, Oct. 4, including the Pro Late Models, 602 Modifieds, USLCI Legend Cars, Super Stock, Factory Outlaws, Skid Plates, Mini Stocks and Bandoleros.
